This is a book about zombies. Sounds fun, right? But check this out: what if a book about zombies… wasn’t fun at all? That’s The Rising.
Brian Keene’s debut novel follows three people dealing with the demon zombie hellscape caused by an accident at a particle accelerator. Their paths converge in a sexual assault van in Pennsylvania in one of the top 5 most gratuitous horrifying things that happen in a book with a lot of contenders.
The Rising doesn’t have the terror of other zombie stories but replaces it without gross-out humor a 15 year old boy might enjoy.

As a teenage girl, I think I can say that, yes, we are pretty terrible, though I have met some good teenaged girls and boys. I don’t claim to be one of them.
I think it also ought to be noted that while Twilight has sold very well, not very many teenage girls I’ve met like it. The biggest Twilight fan I know is my mom’s work friend. I’d say that if you look, there are quite a few YA books that won’t leave you feeling demoralized. I quite like Rainbow Rowell, as well as Sarah J Maas.
Also, Alex, the non-ending seemed to hit you the hardest. If you want to review a girly book with a non-ending, try Looking for Alaska by John Green. My English teacher actually adores this book, but I’d say it’s only so-so, even putting the unsolved mysteries aside. A Hollywood director has picked up the movie project, so it may become interesting to this podcast.
Yeah, I guess you’re right. Twilight’s teens are now 20 somethings. That’s a scary. The midnight shows I went to back in the day were pretty mom heavy.
