RiaW #89: Betsy Bird and the Search for the Lost Alex

MP3

Something very strange is going on in Read it and Weep land.  When Alex goes missing, Ezra, Chris, and Stephen have to call in celebrity blogger/ children’s librarian Betsy Bird to try and find him.  The most likely answer is that he’s lost somewhere inside one of the most overrated kids’ books of all time, so that’s where this journey takes our heroes.

The Giving Tree, Love You Forever, and The Rainbow Fish are all terrible, but which book is Alex stuck in? Will our intrepid trekkers save him in time? How do you say Rainbow Fish in German? Tune in to find out!

I don’t miss me at all.

When Robert Munsch came to my daycare at age 4, I very proudly announced “My daddy doesn’t like your books.”. My dad found the books silly (because they’re kids books) and really wanted to be reading Tolkien to me. All these years I’ve lived in guilt because I actually loved Munsch’s books when I was that age but my 4 year old self lacked the social and communication skills to express that.

  3. Ezra says:

I missed you. Plus, you were our MacGuffin.

That’s the crazy thing too. Most of Munsch is awesome. Then he created one book to bind them, one book to rule them all . . .Like how I worked Tolkien into that one? Eh? Eh?

    Love this!

Hey guys, this episode rocked my socks because I teach elementary school in Scotland and I had to teach a unit on the Rainbow Fish last year. Which I’m pretty convinced everyone does just so that they can do that art project where the kids use shiny paper to make fish for the walls. Display is basically one of the core subjects in elementary school. But what I really want to say is that my favorite children’s book right now is I Want My Hat Back, by Jon Klassen, and I think you might enjoy it.
